SENIOR & SHOPMAKER GALLERY is pleased to present an exhibition featuring the work of contemporary artists drawn from the gallery's inventory alongside works by contemporary furniture designers represented by Dennis Miller Associates, a manufacturer and distributor of contemporary pieces as well as twentieth century classics. Miller, an architect, founded his New York-based company in 1984 to promote the work of artist and architect-designed furniture.

At its most light-hearted, the exhibition presents certain formal correspondences - whether coincidental or intentional - between the visual arts and the field of furniture design as represented by the works in the show. A number of the artists exhibited, including Artschwager, Lewitt, Rauschenberg, and Therrien have created functional furniture or made forays into décor principal elements in their work; similarly, several of the furniture designers featured have art backgrounds and training. The roots of this cross-pollination are found in Bauhaus philosophy, and flourished in this country at educational institutions such as Cranbrook Academy and Black Mountain College. That modernism and postmodernism, surrealist dislocation and minimalist austerity, the organic and the deconstructed, are visually manifested in furniture design as well as in painting and sculpture should come as no surprise.
