Senior & Shopmaker Gallery Senior & Shopmaker Gallery

Betsy Senior and Laurence Shopmaker established SENIOR & SHOPMAKER GALLERY in 2000. The gallery specializes in modern and contemporary art, with a special emphasis on works on paper by major American and European artists. The gallery also maintains an extensive inventory of prints selected from fine art publishers across the country and secondary market sources. After ten years on Madison Square Park, the gallery begins the next decade in its new location at 210 Eleventh Avenue in Chelsea.

The exhibition program includes one-person shows by gallery artists such as William Wegman, Mary Miss, and Charles Simonds, as well as thematic exhibitions that illustrate correspondences in the works of established 20th and 21st century artists. Prints are a vital component of the gallery’s exhibition program and are frequently incorporated with works in other media to underline their stature and importance in artists’ creative endeavors. Exhibitions have received critical review in such publications as the New York Times, New York Magazine, Art in America, ArtNews, ArtForum, Art on Paper, and other trade publications, and works from the gallery have been placed with such institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Morgan Library & Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and others.

Betsy Senior earned her B.A. in Art History at Stanford University, and opened Betsy Senior Gallery in Soho in 1989 before founding Senior & Shopmaker, Inc. in 2000 with Laurence Shopmaker. She serves on the boards of both the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, MA, and the International Fine Print Dealers Association (IFPDA). Other professional affiliations include the National Advisory Council of the Tang Museum, Skidmore College; ArtTable, a national organization for women in the arts; and together with Laurence Shopmaker, the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) and the Advisory Committee for the Madison Square Park Art Program.

Laurence Shopmaker has more than thirty years of fine art, curatorial, and business experience. Early in his career, he was the recipient of both Helena Rubinstein and Rockefeller Fellowships at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. From 1979 to 1984, he served as Assistant Director of the Neuberger Museum in Purchase, NY, and over the past twenty years has held senior positions at Zabriskie Gallery, Max Protetch Gallery, and Barbara Mathes Gallery, where he developed his expertise in 20th Century Modern and Contemporary art. Together with Betsy Senior, he is a member of the Art Dealers Association of America, the International Fine Print Dealers Association, and the Advisory Committee for the Madison Square Park Art Program.
