Senior & Shopmaker Gallery is pleased to open the fall season with an exhibition of prints and related drawings spanning the years 2003 through 2008 by New York-based artist, Terry Winters. Since 1982 when the artist made his first lithograph at ULAE’s studios in West Islip, NY, Winters has produced over 200 prints across a spectrum of media in collaboration with such notable publishers as The Grenfell Press, Two Palms, and the aforementioned ULAE. With works on paper of various media seen in concert, the exhibition seeks to illuminate the integral link between the artist’s dual practices of drawing and printmaking.

Drawing is the critical underpinning of Winters’ work, and provides a preliminary framework for developing his abstract language. Equally fluid in small and large format, and in a range of media including pencil, graphite, and gouache, Winters employs drawing to record and reassemble images, and, in the process of exploring mark-making, to create pattern and pictorial space. Printmaking, by encouraging a changing sequence of images through the proofing phases that lead to an editioned print, is the perfect extension of the Winters’ drawing process. Over the past twenty five years, the artist has systematically explored intaglio, lithography, woodcut, monoprint, and screenprint, reveling in the innate qualities of each and producing prints of remarkable range and tactility.  The exhibition includes four portfolios (including the artist’s most recent, In Blue, from 2008) in which Winters explores lateral relationships between multiple images thus creating open-ended narratives, as well as single, stand-alone prints. Also on view are selected drawings in various media from the same five year time period, which show the interconnection and cross-pollination of ideas which flow between the artist’s drawn and printed work.

Terry Winters was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1949 and received his BFA from Pratt Institute in 1971. Major international solo exhibitions include the Whitney Museum of American Art, 1991; the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, 1999; Kunsthalle, Basel, 2000; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2001; Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, 2003, and the Addison Gallery of American Art, 2004. Signal to Noise, a 10-year survey of paintings and drawings, is currently on view at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. Winters is currently based in New York City and Columbia County, New York.
