New Work
December 8, 2005 - February 4, 2006
Reception: Wednesday, December 7, 6-8PM

Senior & Shopmaker Gallery is pleased to present new work by Tony Conway, the artist's third solo-exhibition at the gallery.

Conway's work is a seamless amalgamation of genre-defying techniques, the result of which possesses the scale of painting, the tonality of drawing, and the materiality of sculpture. Using as a departure point photographs of urban landscapes, Conway drains his images of detail, and then reconstructs them by adding washes of acrylic paint and soft graphite on successive layers of acrylic plastic. The pale colors he deploys on each plastic layer fuse to create a kind of liquescence in which his ambiguous images are suspended. The final works appear highly abstract, almost minimal, until the viewer begins to visually decode the layers of information.

Conway is after an effect that somehow reconstitutes his experience of the scene without actually representing it. His street pictures capture fragmented urban activity in which figures seem adrift in partial narratives that defy resolution. Like the New York City life he so often shoots, his emotionally resonant scenes are infused with anonymity, his figures familiar yet elusive.

Conway was born in Manchester, New Hampshire in 1951, and resides in New York. His work has recently been featured in a solo exhibition, Transit, at Galerie Deschler, Berlin in June 2005; as well as group exhibitions, All About…Berlin, White Box, Munich and Reflexionen: Skulptur und Zeichnung, Art Center Berlin Friedrichstrasse, Berlin.

Concurrent with Tony Conway's exhibition will be a show of works on paper by Dan Flavin, Untitled (to Don Judd, colorist), 1987 & other editions, that will feature a portfolio of seven monochromatic lithographs.

Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday 10 to 6; Saturday 11 to 6. For further information please contact Chris Murtha at 212-213-6767.
